Papers of Walt Whitman [manuscript], 1881-1887.

The collection contains three letters, 1881 September 29, 1887 March 6, and n.y., December 2, Whitman to Charles Eldridge and [Alma] asking that some money be conveyed to Walter Godey, and tax and revenue reports to Paul Liptay; commenting on poor health, his bullying doctor, and his writing; and describing a trip to the theater. The collection also contains a photograph of Whitman with the children of J. H. and Amelia Johnston; an envelope addressed by Whitman to Josiah Child; and an autograph manuscript poem by Whitman entitled "you Tides with Ceaseless Swell and Ebbs." With the original Whitman items are a letter, 1948 December 23, Bertha Johnston to Doris Neale which accompanied the photograph of Whitman and the Johnston children; postcard, 1948 November 12, to Miss Doris Kellogg with a clipping of a Whitman Medal attached; and eleven miscellaneous prints of Whitman and four clippings related to him.
